What’s the Recovery Time after a Microneedling Session?

Are you looking for a skin rejuvenation treatment that can cover a variety of skin imperfections at the same time? Microneedling is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments for just that reason.

Our aesthetics team at A Beautiful You Medical Spa, led by Kenneth Thompson, MD, provides microneedling geared to your specific needs.

How does microneedling improve the way my skin looks?

Another name for microneedling is “collagen induction therapy.” As you age, your skin produces less collagen, a key protein that keeps your skin smooth. Microneedling triggers the production of new collagen, which firms and smooths your skin.

We use a device with controlled electric power to make tiny microscopic wounds in your skin. Don’t worry. The treatment doesn’t leave scars.

Your immune system induces skin remodeling when we deliver your microneedling treatment. Your skin restores itself by rushing key nutrients to the wound sites. The healing process includes new collagen, which makes the difference in your skin’s appearance.

What skin imperfections can microneedling improve?

Do you have acne scars or large pores? Maybe your problem is sun damage. Microneedling isn’t only for your face. If you have noticeable stretch marks from childbirth that stop you from wearing a bikini, help is here.

Microneedling covers a host of skin blemishes, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone — dark spots from sun damage
  • Uneven skin texture — rough spots
  • Acne scars
  • Large pores
  • Surgical scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Sagging skin

How long is the recovery from microneedling?

Most of the visible side effects from microneedling only last two or three days. Recovery from microneedling is much shorter than that for some other aesthetic procedures such as chemical peels.

Not surprisingly, your skin is red after microneedling, and you may look as if you’re sunburned. Most of the red blush fades within two days. You may also experience some swelling during the first 48 hours

You need to take special care of your face in the days immediately following the treatment. We give you specific post-procedure instructions. Follow these instructions to ensure beautiful results.

After microneedling, wash your hands thoroughly before you touch your face. We may prescribe a cream for you to apply to avoid infection. Don’t wear makeup for at least 24 hours.

For at least 72 hours after treatment, avoid strenuous activity such as gym workouts. Don’t swim, go in a hot tub or sauna, or go anywhere that you might sweat profusely. We let you know when it’s safe to do so.

Your skin may be dry for a few days after your treatment. Use moisturizers and nonabrasive, gentle cleansers as directed on your instructions.

We can boost healing from microneedling with the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). We draw a sample of your blood to develop a concentrated mass of platelets, which have growth factors and nutrients. Then we apply the resulting serum to speed your healing.
