Understanding Laser Hair Removal

You want to be outside now that the weather is turning warmer, but warm weather means shorts, skirts and swimsuits. It seems as though you’re always having to shave your legs. And when you step into your bikini, you’re faced with trimming your pubic hair again and again.

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to skip these time-consuming steps? Laser hair removal gives you that freedom.

Did you know that you spend about 72 days, or 1,728 hours, shaving your legs over your lifetime? Are you ready to be done with this time-waster? You have a lot of company. Laser hair removal is one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the United States. It’s also safe and effective.

Our trained medical laser aestheticians at A Beautiful You Medical Spa, under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Thompson, provide laser hair removal treatments to our many satisfied patients.

How does laser hair removal eliminate unwanted hair?

We selected the Venus Velocity™ laser as the most efficient system of hair removal.  The Venus Velocity laser targets the hair in its growth phase, when it’s most easily removed.

The laser emits brief pulses of light energy to the area being treated. The laser’s heat reaches the hair follicles just under your skin. Pigment in your hair soaks in the laser’s light, which destroys the integrity of the hair follicle.

But your individual hairs grow at different rates. That’s a good thing. Hair comes out when you brush it every day. Think if all strands of your hair fell out at once. Because of the different growth rates, you need more than one session to eliminate all of the unwanted hair.

Preparing for laser hair removal

Before your laser hair removal treatment, you can shave the unwanted hair, but avoid plucking, waxing, or electrolysis for at least six weeks before the procedure. Waxing and other hair removal methods that temporarily remove the roots of the hair render the laser treatment ineffective.

You also should limit sun exposure before and after the treatment to avoid complications like hyperpigmentation. Sunlight makes your skin too sensitive to the laser’s energy.

On the day of your appointment, take a shower so that your skin is clean. Don’t apply any moisturizers or makeup to the area being treated. We also clean the target area thoroughly before beginning the procedure.

Does laser hair removal work on darker skin tones?

Yes. Dark skin does have an increased risk of discoloration, but we use different settings on the Venus Velocity laser to ensure beautiful results for all skin tones.

How long does laser hair removal take?

It depends on the area being treated. For small areas, it can take up to 10 minutes; for large areas such as your legs, it can take about an hour.

Is there any downtime after treatment?

There’s no downtime after your appointment. If you have any discomfort, apply ice packs or cool compresses, and we can give you a calming cream if you need it. You can resume your normal daily activities immediately. Just remember to wear sunscreen on the treated areas and avoid sun exposure.
