If you’re considering treatment with injectables to help maintain your youthful facial appearance, you’re not alone.
Americans get more than 10 million injections of Botox® and dermal fillers per year. They’re the two most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments in the United States today.
At A Beautiful You Medical Spa, our expert staff, under the guidance of board-certified physician Dr. Kenneth Thompson, provides the following injectable treatments to greatly diminish premature signs of aging:
- Botox®
- Xeomin®
- Dermal fillers
- Kybella®
Botox and Xeomin treat forehead lines, frown lines between your brows, and crow’s feet, while Kybella treats excess fat under the chin. Dermal fillers plump up lips and hollow cheeks, give you a firmer jawline, and soften your smile lines on either side of your nose.
Here are some of our tips on how to get the most out of your injectable treatments and make them last.
Follow post-procedure instructions
We provide you with written aftercare instructions. Following the instructions is the first step in ensuring that your procedure is as effective as it’s meant to be.
Avoid the sun for several days after your treatment, so don’t plan a trip to the beach at that time. The sun’s UV rays can dilute the effect of ingredients in some injectables and disperse the medication too quickly in others.
You should forgo vigorous workouts for a few days as well, so skip your heavy gym routine. Drinking alcohol soon after an injectable treatment increases bruising and swelling.
Don’t rub or massage your face for a day or two after treatment. We target the injections, and rubbing your skin causes the medication to disperse away from the target area.
Also, avoid putting pressure on the area that’s been treated, so sleeping on your back is a safe way to maximize the effect of the treatment.
Follow a safe skin care regimen
We can advise you on a skin care routine to help maintain the magic of injectables. A gentle cleanser, high quality moisturizer and anti-aging serum along with daily sunscreen helps you keep your skin in good condition.
A moisturizer with hyaluronic acid calms inflammation and helps the effect of dermal fillers last longer.
Use proper sun protection
As we noted above, sun exposure too soon after your treatment renders the treatment ineffective. Wear sunglasses and a hat when in the sun and use good sun hygiene. Avoid the sun during the middle of the day when UV rays are at their peak.
Invest in clothing with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) if you’re going to be in the sun for an extended period of time. Apply and reapply sunscreen as directed on the bottle.
Keep hydrated
Hydration is your friend. Avoid caffeine right before and after your treatment; it’s dehydrating.
It’s more important than ever to stay hydrated once you have injectables. Keep your reusable water bottle handy and drink water often. Give your skin extra love with hydrating moisturizers and serums.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Are you taking care of your body by following commonsense advice such as not smoking, limiting alcohol, and eating a proper diet? Smoking cancels the effect of Botox and may increase the risk of infections after dermal fillers.
