Why does acne sometimes occur in adulthood?
Following are a number of reasons acne can occur in your adult years.
The effect of hormones
Women are much more likely than men to be troubled with adult acne. As a woman, you may see breakouts from your 20s through your 40s. Changing hormone levels are often to blame.
You may notice breakouts around the time of your period. Starting or discontinuing birth control pills may also trigger a breakout due to unstable hormone levels.
Pregnancy is another time when your hormones are in flux, and you could see breakouts then. Likewise, at menopause, your estrogen level falls dramatically; you could even experience a breakout around age 50.
Your genes
Genes play a role. If other close relatives have had acne, you may be predisposed to have it during adulthood.
Stress
If you’re under a great deal of stress, whether it’s starting a new job or moving to a new location, you could have a breakout. Your hormones may trigger increased oil production, which can produce adult acne.
In addition, some skin care products and makeup can clog your pores, and some medications may increase your risk for acne breakouts.
