You thought you would be done with acne once you were out of the teenage years. But you still have breakouts at times. What’s going on? Is there an end point to acne?
To help with persistent acne, our staff at A Beautiful You Medical Spa is armed with a variety of treatments. Under the direction of medical director Kenneth Thompson, MD, our team can find solutions that work for you.
Why does acne sometimes occur in adulthood?
Following are a number of reasons acne can occur in your adult years.
The effect of hormones
Women are much more likely than men to be troubled with adult acne. As a woman, you may see breakouts from your 20s through your 40s. Changing hormone levels are often to blame.
You may notice breakouts around the time of your period. Starting or discontinuing birth control pills may also trigger a breakout due to unstable hormone levels.
Pregnancy is another time when your hormones are in flux, and you could see breakouts then. Likewise, at menopause, your estrogen level falls dramatically; you could even experience a breakout around age 50.
Genes play a role. If other close relatives have had acne, you may be predisposed to have it during adulthood.
If you’re under a great deal of stress, whether it’s starting a new job or moving to a new location, you could have a breakout. Your hormones may trigger increased oil production, which can produce adult acne.
In addition, some skin care products and makeup can clog your pores, and some medications may increase your risk for acne breakouts.
Effective acne treatments
At A Beautiful You Med Spa, we find a treatment that works to calm your acne breakouts and keep your skin smooth and clear. Here are some of the procedures and products that could help you.
We customize our chemical peels to your specific needs. We can produce a peel that treats your acne while minimizing scarring and shrinking large pores. The peel triggers the production of healthy new skin cells and removes the top, damaged layer of skin.
Venus Viva™ laser skin resurfacing and Alma® Pixel Perfect™ laser
Skin resurfacing via laser can deliver a number of improvements in your skin at one time. In addition to smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles and correcting pigmentation issues, these treatments can minimize large pores and acne scars. If your skin is pockmarked, laser resurfacing can improve your skin’s appearance.
Microneedling is an effective treatment for acne and for minimizing acne scars. It produces new collagen and elastin and sloughs away damaged skin cells. We only do microneedling when there are no open lesions on your skin.
Medical-grade skin care products
We’ve researched skin care products and have selected what we believe are the best products on the market that help solve your skin issues.
For example, ZO skin care products target acne as well as other skin imperfections. Skin Medica’s foaming wash, purifying toner, and acne treatment lotion reduce bacteria on your skin and unclog pores so your skin can heal.
These and other medical grade products are only available to you at licensed medical practices.
